Special Structures and Cultural Heritage - İTO Kasktas

Within the scope of a project planned in close proximity to the sea in Istanbul’s Historic Peninsula, it is of critical importance that the deep excavation works to be carried out do not compromise the integrity of surrounding cultural heritage structures. For this purpose, a comprehensive structural health monitoring (SHM) program was designed by the GeoAnts engineering team to enable early detection of potential deformations and movements in adjacent structures.
As part of the program, high-precision wireless tiltmeter sensors were installed on the surrounding historic buildings to continuously monitor their global horizontal displacement behavior. In addition, vertical settlements at the foundations of the structures were monitored with millimeter-level accuracy using custom-designed hydraulic settlement cell systems developed by GeoAnts. As the deep excavation progressed, weldable strain gauge sensors were fixed onto steel structural elements to measure the loads acting on the excavation support systems.
Data collected from all sensors were integrated into a cloud-based platform through data acquisition unit systems, enabling real-time data transmission. This approach allowed even the smallest movements in surrounding structures to be detected at an early stage, ensuring that the deep excavation process progressed safely and without causing damage to cultural heritage assets.
